Life Legacy


William J. Lewis, 95, of East Syracuse passed away Thursday at Sunnyside Care Center. He was a lifelong resident of East Syracuse. Bill retired from GE in 1980 as Machine Design Specialist in the semi-conductor Dept.; he also had worked for Benedict Silver Plating in East Syracuse, Kilian Mfg. in Syracuse and for Seal-Rite in Fulton. He was a communicant of St. Matthew’s Church East Syracuse and a Scout Master with Troop 111.
Bill joined the East Syracuse Fire Dept. in 1935 and was a member with 75 years of service. He was one of the three men who founded EAVES and was its first president; he was also one of the first Para-Medics in New York State. He was a member of the Onondaga County Fire Association and the NYS Fire Association. Among the many awards from both State and County he had received, Bill was the recipient of the first Red Jacket award from the Onondaga County Fire Association. He also was a First Aid and Medic instructor with the Red Cross.
An avid outdoors man Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing at his camp in the Adirondacks, he also enjoyed doing wood carvings and was a member of the Onondaga Woodcarvers Club.
He is predeceased by his wife Ellen, grandson William J. Lewis III, brother Harvey Lewis and sister Margaret Hard.

Bill is survived by his son William J. (Pat) Lewis Jr. of East Syracuse, daughter Joan Ellen (Richard) McFee of Hawaii, grandchildren Laurie Djonovich and Michael Lewis, great grandchildren Katherine Lewis and Matthew Lewis, brother in law Edward David and sister in law Betty David, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 8:30 am Thursday July 18 from the Delaney-Greabell-Adydan Funeral Home and 9:00 am in St. Matthew’s Church. Calling hours will be Wednesday July 17 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home 241 Kinne St. East Syracuse. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery Minoa.
